European Aquatics is delighted to announce that the 21st edition of the European Aquatics Open Water Swimming Championships will be held in Stari Grad, on the island of Hvar, Croatia, from 28th to 31st May 2025. This event marks a significant return to the origins of the competition, as Stari Grad hosted the inaugural championships in 1989.
Stari Grad, one of Europe’s oldest towns, offers a unique blend of historical charm and natural beauty, making it an ideal setting for this prestigious event. The town’s rich maritime heritage and crystal-clear Adriatic waters provide a perfect backdrop for athletes and spectators alike.
The European Aquatics Open Water Swimming Championships have evolved significantly since their inception. Initially held as standalone events, they were integrated into the European Aquatics Championships in 1995. Over the years, the competition has showcased the endurance and skill of Europe’s finest open water swimmers.

Italy have been the most successful nation at the competition, with Germany not far behind. The competition will feature the traditional 5km and 10km events for both men and women, as well as a new knockout sprint event, which will seek to add value for the development of the discipline. The 6km mixed relay event will also be on the schedule for the competition, giving those in attendance a whole host of different formats to look forward to.
Returning to Stari Grad for the 21st edition not only honours the championship’s history but also highlights the town’s enduring connection to open water swimming. Dr Josip Varvodic, First Vice-President of European Aquatics and President of the Croatian Swimming Federation, expressed his enthusiasm: “We are thrilled to bring the championships back to where it all began. Stari Grad’s unique combination of historical significance and natural beauty makes it an unparalleled location for this event. The 2025 edition will honour the legacy of open water swimming while celebrating its continued growth and evolution.”
Antonio Skarpa, Mayor of Stari Grad, welcomed the return of the championships: “Stari Grad is known for its history, cultural heritage, natural wealth, but also for swimming. Our beautiful bay is the cradle of open water swimming competitions in Croatia. Major international swimming competitions have been held here throughout history and positioned Stari Grad on the international map of the most attractive swimming destinations. We are looking forward to hosting this great competition and are ready to welcome swimmers, their teams and fans to our beautiful city and island.”
